Glider

Also known as Sailplane in many countries. 

This is an aircraft that flies without an engine. In order to take off it is towed by a powered aircraft until it reaches a given altitude. The tow line is then released and the glider manages to keep airborne thru the dynamics of hot thermal air currents. It is controlled just like a normal aircraft and can be directed to safely land on any airfield. 

Glider flying started back in the 1930's in Germany and was used extensively as troop carriers in World War II. Glider flying isn't that popular in the Philippines although a group of German enthusiast have started a glider club in Nueva Ecija since 2009. One would likewise need a pilot's license to fly gliders here. Looks exciting!
